For the best results from your treatment, it is important to take care of your aligners and teeth properly. Be sure to remove your aligners for eating and drinking. Clean your aligners with a soft toothbrush and water before putting them back in your mouth. Do not use toothpaste because it is too abrasive for the aligners and will cause your aligners to look dull.
Other dental cleaning products to avoid include denture cleaners and mouthwash because these products can cause the aligners to become more visible and give the teeth a yellow look while wearing them.
Some additional care tips:
- Rinse your aligners when you remove them: Dry saliva and plaque lead to foul-smelling bacteria.
- Brush and floss your teeth before putting your aligners back in: Proper oral hygiene is key in maintaining healthy teeth and avoiding cavities and decay.
- Be gentle while brushing: Vigorous brushing can scratch your aligners and leave visible etchings.
- Do not eat or drink (water is the only exception) while wearing Invisalign. Many foods and drinks can stain or discolor your aligners. And remember…using toothpaste to clean your aligners will scratch the plastic and dull your aligners. These scratches also make small areas in your aligners where bacteria can live and breed.
